What is a Cavity?

At Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center we have a variety of options to fill your cavities, however we would rather you prevent them from invading your teeth. A cavity is a space inside a tooth that remains once tooth decay is removed. Tooth decay can affect both the outer coating of a tooth (enamel) and the inner layer (dentin).

So what causes this decay? When foods with carbohydrates like bread, cereal, milk, soda, fruit, or candy stay on your teeth, the bacteria in your mouth turn them into acids. The bacteria, acid, food debris, and your saliva then combine to form plaque, which clings to the teeth. The acids in plaque dissolve the enamel, creating holes called cavities. Fortunately, there are many things you can do to help prevent the formation of a cavity. In between professional cleanings, brush your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes using fluoride toothpaste that strengthens teeth. In addition, clean between your teeth with floss and avoid sugary foods and drinks.

If you are experiencing tooth sensitivity, give us a call. For more information about the services we provide at the office, visit www.nicholascosmeticdentalcenter.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center in Philadelphia, PA, call 215-279-1193.

Connection Between Diet and Dental Health

At Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center, we may not be able to assist you with improving your diet, but we can certainly assist you with improving your dental health. Many patients don’t realize that diet and dental health go hand-in-hand and what you eat and drink, in addition to how frequently you consume food and beverages play an important role in preventing tooth decay and gum disease.

It’s no surprise that sugary and salty “empty calorie” foods can harm your health. Not only because they offer no nutritional value, but because they can adhere to teeth. The bacteria in your mouth feed off these sugars, releasing acids and that’s what leads to tooth decay. It’s recommended to protect your dental health (and your diet) by eating foods from each of the five food groups.

Cheese, milk, plain yogurt, calcium-fortified tofu, leafy greens and almonds are foods that may benefit tooth health thanks to their high amounts of calcium and beneficial nutrients. Fruits and vegetables are also good choices for a healthy smile since they are high in water and fiber, which balance the sugars they contain and help to clean the teeth.

If you have further questions about how your diet affects your dental health, give us a call. For more information about the services we provide at the office, visit www.nicholascosmeticdentalcenter.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with one of our doctors at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center in Philadelphia, PA, call 215-279-1193.

Are You Flossing Correctly?

Flossing your teeth is more important to your well-being than brushing and yet so many of us find reasons not to do it. Flossing does not only remove food from the teeth, but it removes plaque that can lead to tooth decay and eventually if left untreated, tooth loss. At Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center, you may have told our hygienists that you don’t know how to floss, but after reading this post, you will no longer be able to use that as an excuse.

The correct flossing technique goes something like this:

  • Wind 18 inches of floss around middle fingers of each hand. Pinch floss between thumbs and index fingers, leaving a one-to-two-inch length in between. Use thumbs to direct floss between upper teeth.

  • Keep a one-to-two-inch length of floss controlled between fingers. Use index fingers to glide floss between contacts of the lower teeth.

  • Gently guide floss between the teeth by using a zig-zag motion and be sure to contour floss around the side of the tooth.

The Proper Brushing Technique

At Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center, our staff wants you to keep your permanent teeth for a lifetime and this begins with brushing your teeth. Brushing your teeth for two minutes twice a day helps you remove plaque which can lead to cavities and tooth decay. Many of our patients don’t realize that there are a number of proper techniques for effective tooth brushing so here is one we’d like to share.

  • Place the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gums.

  • Move the brush back-and-forth gently in short strokes.

  • Brush the outer surfaces, the inside surfaces and the chewing surfaces of all teeth.

  • To clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth, tilt the brush vertically and make several up-and-down strokes.

  • Brush your tongue to remove bacteria and keep your breath fresh and don’t forget to floss!

How to Make Oral Care Fun for Kids

Brushing and flossing is a good habit to get into at a young age, however it is sometimes hard to get kids to brush and floss routinely. At Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center of Philadelphia, PA, we want to stress the importance of taking care of those baby teeth.

Baby teeth are the place-holders for adult teeth, so even though they will fall out eventually, it is important to keep them healthy and present for as long as they will be there. A good oral care routine is great to start at a young age, as well. Take some tips on how to make brushing and flossing fun for kids!

Let your child pick out their own toothbrush. There are so many different colors and even cartoon characters on toothbrushes. This is a good way to get them excited to brush. Let them pick the flavor of toothpaste they would like to use, too. Just make sure the toothpaste has fluoride in it for cavity fighting.

Another way to get them to brush is to make the actual task fun and exciting. Brush and floss your teeth at the same time and turn on some music. Play their favorite song for two minutes so you both know you are brushing for the right amount of time.

For questions about a good oral hygiene routine, contact Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center. To schedule a cleaning at our Philadelphia, PA office, call us at (215) 279-1193 or visit our website, www.nicholascosmeticdentalcenter.com

The Importance of Replacing Missing Teeth

When a tooth goes missing, the rest of the mouth begins to change. In order to keep the health of your mouth and jaw, the tooth must be replaced as soon as possible. At Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center, we are informing our patients at our Philadelphia, PA dental practice why it is so important to replace missing teeth.

When a tooth goes missing, the other teeth along that jaw line will begin to shift towards the open space. This creates spacing in the teeth that may allow injury to the gums and places for bacteria to hide. It can also create noticeable spaces in your smile.

When a tooth is not replaced quickly after it goes missing, the jawbone in the area begins to deteriorate. It has nothing holding it in its place anymore, so the bone disintegrates along with the gum tissue. This is why it is important to replace missing teeth as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the more complications there will be with replacement.

For tooth replacement options here at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center, we offer dentures, bridges, and dental implants. We also have mini dental implants available for smaller spaces or more stable bases for dentures.

Do not let a missing tooth affect your oral health. To schedule a tooth replacement consultation in our Philadelphia, PA office, call us at (215) 279-1193 or visit our website, www.nicholascosmeticdentalcenter.com

How to Keep Teeth White and Bright

A white smile can really be a confidence booster. Whether you just had your teeth whitened, or you are looking to whiten them now, it is nice to know how to preserve a white and bright smile! Here at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center in Philadelphia, PA, we want to give our patients tips for avoiding staining!

The first rule for having white teeth is really sticking to a good oral hygiene routine. Plaque and tartar can stain teeth as well as hold in other stain-causers. Remember to brush two or three times per day, and floss once per day. It helps if you keep a travel-sized toothbrush at work or school. Make sure to brush your tongue, too!

Brushing more often will help lift and keep away stains, however if you cannot brush soon after a meal, try including some foods that help clean your teeth as you eat them. Foods like apples and celery scrub the surface of your teeth as you bite and chew them.

When consuming dark foods and liquids, try to minimize the contact the food has with your teeth. For instance, when drinking cola or coffee, drink it through straw. After eating dark foods like blueberries or beets, rinse your mouth out with water.

There are ways to whiten and keep your teeth white right at home. For a kick-start on whitening, ask us about our custom teeth whitening trays. To schedule an appointment, call Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center of Philadelphia, PA at (215) 279-1193 or visit our website, www.nicholascosmeticdentalcenter.com

Do Pacifiers Affect Baby Teeth?

It’s one of the hardest habits to break and can require a great deal of persuasion – parents often struggle with weaning their child off a pacifier. Yes pacifiers provide a sense of security and a method of self-relaxation for infants, but the downside of pacifiers is the effect they can have on the growth and development of the teeth and mouth. At Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center we always welcome new patients, including pediatric patients who have yet to wean off of the pacifier.

Prolonged pacifier use can cause changes in the shape of the roof of the mouth, prevent proper growth of the mouth and create problems with tooth alignment. Long-term pacifier use can lead to a variety of complications including tilting in of the bottom teeth and slanting in of the top and front teeth. Narrowing of the roof of the mouth and misalignment of the jaws can also occur. The Academy of General Dentistry recommends that children stop using pacifiers by the age of two. Up until that age, any alignment problem with the teeth or developing bone is usually corrected within six months after pacifier use has stopped.

If you have questions about pacifiers and teeth development, give us a call. Why Do My Teeth and Gums Hurt?

At Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center we want you to understand that taking care of your mouth is very important, not only for your teeth and gums, but for your overall health. Neglecting your teeth and gums can make them susceptible to problems such as cavities, gum disease as well as bacterial infections. These problems can also compromise your oral well-being and cause your teeth and gums to hurt.

If your teeth hurt, a cavity could be the culprit. Cavities occur when plaque buildup on your teeth creates tooth decay. Plaque contains harmful acids that eat away at your tooth enamel and create tiny holes. Therefore, if you do not regularly remove plaque deposits from your teeth, your cavities will grow and begin to hurt. If left untreated, lingering plaque deposits can also affect your gums. If not removed daily, plaque hardens into a substance called tartar that can irritate your gums and lead to gum disease.

If you are experiencing pain with your mouth or gums don’t delay, give us a call. To learn more about services we offer at our practice visit www.nicholascosmeticdentalcenter.com for more information. Fruits and Veggies for Fresh Breath

Bad breath, also known as halitosis, is a common condition that affects everyone periodically. To eliminate the odor we might catch ourselves chewing a piece of minty gum on the go, or taking a quick swig of mouthwash before we leave the house for a night out.  Here at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center our dentists know that bad breath can be very embarrassing, but did you know that you can fight it by eating a piece of celery?

Celery fights bad breath because it is rich in fiber which fights Halitosis by breaking down plaque and sulfur compounds.  Therefore, celery is a great thing to eat to help clean your mouth. It is also effective to munch on a carrot or an apple. Snacks that include crispy fresh fruits and vegetables step up your saliva flow between meals to help wash away bacteria from teeth, tongue and gums that can cause bad breath. These snacks can also help alleviate bad breath caused by hunger or fasting.

Electric vs Manual Toothbrush

Here at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center our dentists aren’t picky about what type of toothbrush you use because the important thing is that you are brushing your teeth correctly. However, we thought we would tell explain how brushing your teeth with an electric toothbrush compares to manual brushing.

It’s possible to brush your teeth effectively with a manual toothbrush. However, an electric toothbrush can be a great alternative to a manual one, especially if you have arthritis or other conditions that make it difficult to brush well. Although almost any toothbrush can do an effective job, research suggests there is one electronic toothbrush bristle configuration that seems to be better at removing plaque and preventing gum disease. If you choose an electric toothbrush, make sure the toothbrush is comfortable to hold and easy to use. It’s important to remember that the purpose of a toothbrush is to remove plaque and to stimulate the gums to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Whether you choose an electric toothbrush or a manual one, remember that what’s most important is daily brushing and flossing.

Tooth Colored Fillings

To treat a cavity our dentists at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center will remove the decayed portion of the tooth and then “fill” the area on the tooth where the decayed material was removed. Fillings are also used to repair cracked or broken teeth that have been worn down from misuse (tooth grinding). Here at the office we utilize white fillings, also known as tooth colored fillings, because they exude the most natural looking appearance.

Composite resins (tooth colored fillings) provide solid durability and resistance to fracture in small to mid-size fillings that need to survive the moderate pressure from the constant pressure of chewing. Composite fillings require the tooth to be kept clean and dry while the cavity is being filled, which is why they may take longer to apply than any other type of filling. Although no filling lasts forever, tooth colored fillings have been known to last for over 10 years. It is a safe, affordable and attractive solution for many dental drawbacks.

Advantages of Dental Implants

The practice of implant dentistry requires expertise in planning, surgery and tooth restoration, which is why we at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center are proud to offer dental implants and mini implants to our patients who have lost a tooth or teeth due to periodontal disease, an injury or another reason. Dental implants are replacement tooth roots. They provide a strong foundation for fixed (permanent) or removable replacement teeth that are made to match your natural teeth.

Replacing missing teeth is important to your overall health and also to the health of your other teeth. When natural teeth are missing, you lose chewing ability, and un-replaced teeth can cause other teeth to be lost, tipped, or crowded. Having missing teeth is also embarrassing, but dental implants can restore your smile, leaving you with more self-esteem and a new boost of confidence. A major benefit to dental implants is that they preserve bone, preventing deterioration of the facial structure, and therefore improving appearance.

Benefits of Using a Tongue Scraper

We all know that the beneficial effects of daily brushing as a part of our dental healthcare will help in improving of our overall tooth and gum hygiene, but what about the hygiene of our tongues? Our bodies are constantly exposed to toxins from food, beverages, and the environment, and when toxins are not properly digested and eliminated, they linger in the body and begin to compromise our wellbeing. Here at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center, we want you to understand the importance of incorporating a tongue scraper into your oral hygiene routine.

Scraping the tongue daily removes any build-up which, if left untreated, can accumulate a significant number of bacteria. Tongue scraping is also slightly more effective than toothbrushes when it comes to controlling bad breath. Believe it or not, regularly scraping your tongue will enhance the power of your taste buds. When the grime from the deposit on your tongue is absent, it’s only natural that you find your food much tastier. Even if you are a smoker or enjoy strong-flavored foods, this daily dental ritual can save you from bad breath and other problems. You should clean your tongue at least once a day, but considering how little time it takes, it’s not a bad idea to do it every time you brush your teeth.

What Happens During a Dental Cleaning?

No matter how much you diligently brush or floss your teeth at home, harmful bacteria grow in your mouth that can only be removed by a dental professional. These bacteria can cause gum disease, and significantly affect your overall health. Here at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center our dentists will use professional tools to remove plaque, tartar and bacteria build-up that you are unable to efficiently remove yourself.

According to the Academy of General Dentistry it is recommended that a dentist or hygienist perform a dental cleaning every six months. The professional dental cleaning reinforces the home-care oral health regimen of brushing and flossing and gives the dentist an opportunity to locate areas in the mouth that may need special attention. During a teeth cleaning, our dentists will thoroughly clean the area above and below the gum line with scaling tools to rid them of plaque and tartar. Once the surfaces are smooth, polishing is done using a slow speed hand piece with a soft rubber cup that spins on the end. Last but not least, the dentist flosses every crevice between your teeth. He or she may apply fluoride if needed.

Brushing Teeth Correctly

Brushing your teeth is recommended for two to three times per day. With all of that brushing, it would be great to know you are doing it right and gaining the benefits from it! At Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center, we want to brush up on brushing to make sure our patients in the Philadelphia, PA area and patients everywhere know the proper way to brush teeth.

As mentioned before, brushing should be done two or three times per day. Two times is the absolute minimum, but if three times is possible, that is actually best. Plaque can form just hours after brushing, allowing stain-causing residue to sit on teeth and promoting the weakening of enamel. A third time in the middle of the day is great to remove plaque once more until bedtime. Brushing should be done for a full two minutes, each time.

The brush should be moved in a circular motion or an up-and-down motion. This allows the gum line to be cleaned and allows the toothbrush to reach the whole tooth. Make sure to brush all surfaces of the tooth. This includes the fronts, the insides, the backs, and the chewing surfaces. Split the mouth into four sections and spend about thirty seconds on each section.

In addition to brushing correctly, flossing every day is vital for removal of plaque the forms between teeth. To schedule a cleaning with Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center of Philadelphia, PA, call us at (215) 279-1193 or visit our website, www.nicholascosmeticdentalcenter.com

TMD

TMD can be a very painful and frustrating condition to deal with. The symptoms that go along with TMD may seem unrelenting, but there are treatments. The experienced dentists of Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center in Philadelphia, PA offer relief to patients suffering from the effects of TMD.

TMD, or temporomandibular disorder, is a condition where the temporomandibular joint, the TMJ, is dysfunctional. The TMJ is the joint that connects the jawbone to the skull. The joint can become enflamed, swollen, and tender. It can cause aching around the ear and face, difficulty chewing, and a clicking sound. The joint may also lock the mouth open or closed.

The cause of TMD is often not clear. However, if the TMJ disc is eroded or moved out of place, it can cause TMD. Also if the joint’s cartilage is damaged by arthritis or if the joint as a whole is damaged by injury, these can also cause TMD. Often, grinding the teeth or clenching the jaw can also lead to TMD.

The dentists here at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center can observe the TMJ and determine if TMD is the problem. A night guard is available to prevent the teeth grinding at night, or at least lessen the effects. Surgery for TMD is sometimes needed, but often just changing the way the jaw muscles are used through behavioral treatment is enough to provide relief.

If you are experiencing a sore or painful jaw, come in for an evaluation. To schedule an appointment at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center in Philadelphia, PA, call us at (215) 279-1193 or visit our website, www.nicholascosmeticdentalcenter.com

Clear Braces for a More Discreet Straightening Process

Straightening your teeth is an investment in a beautiful smile. While the end result is fantastic, often times patients do not like the look of braces during treatment, which can deter patients from straightening their teeth like they want. Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center of Philadelphia, PA offers clear braces to their patients desiring straight teeth but a more discreet process.

Clear braces work just like traditional metal braces, but the brackets are made of ceramic. The ceramic brackets are translucent, so they blend right in with your teeth. In certain cases, a clear wire is also available for even more discretion. These braces have advanced over time, so unlike versions of the past, the brackets are now stain-resistant. With good care, this keeps them unnoticeable for the duration of the straightening process. Clear braces are available for most cases.

The clear braces work just like traditional braces do, so the ceramic brackets are bonded to the fronts of your teeth and a wire is clipped in that is tightened every few weeks. Over time, the consistent pressure from the wire moves the teeth into the directed positions.

If you are looking to straighten your teeth but do not want to have that metallic smile for a year or more, ceramic braces may be the perfect option for you. To schedule a consultation with the dentists of Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center here in Philadelphia, PA, call us at (215) 279-1193 or visit our website, www.nicholascosmeticdentalcenter.com

Why Are Wisdom Teeth Extracted?

When it comes to tooth extractions, wisdom teeth are very commonly extracted. While some wisdom teeth grow in okay, even those can be recommended for removal. The doctors of Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center perform wisdom teeth extractions for many of their patients in the Philadelphia, PA area.

Wisdom teeth often come with complications. Many people do not have enough room in their mouth to grow wisdom teeth in correctly. When a wisdom tooth grows in at the wrong angle, it can damage other teeth, causing pain and irritation. This bad angle also creates hard-to-reach spaces in the mouth where bacteria can collect. In the event that the tooth becomes stuck in the jawbone, impacted, the tooth will only emerge partially. When the tooth only partially emerges, it can leave a flap of gum tissue over the tooth, which is a great spot for bacteria to become trapped. This can cause gum disease and decay the tooth.

Even when wisdom teeth grow in correctly and with enough room, they are still sometimes recommended to be removed. Since they are so far back in the mouth, they are hard to reach for brushing and flossing. This is especially recommended for those with a weakened immune system.

Wisdom teeth extraction is a common procedure and you are under great care by the skilled doctors of Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center in Philadelphia, PA. To schedule an appointment, call us at (215) 279-1193 or visit our website, www.nicholascosmeticdentalcenter.com

Scaling and Planing Procedure in Philadelphia, PA

Gum disease is irritating, painful, and if not treated, it can lead to tooth loss. Not to mention it diminishes the look of your smile. When gum disease travels down to the roots of teeth, a scaling and planing procedure must be performed to clean the tooth. The skilled dentists here at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center are trained in scaling and planing and perform them here in our Philadelphia, PA dental office.

When gums are diseased, they can begin to recede and create deep pockets. Since they pull away from the teeth, this allows bacteria to reach the tooth’s root and wreak havoc. The tooth’s root is now vulnerable to the bacteria and can be decayed. When left untreated, this will eventually lead to the loss of the tooth. In order to clean out the bacteria and prevent any more from harboring, a scaling and planing is performed. A scaling is performed with a metal tool that will scrap the tooth clean of any bacteria. A planing is then the process where the tooth is smoothed out. Any rough patches where bacteria can be caught are smoothed down. This process is usually completed in a couple of appointments. Depending on the level of disease, the mouth may be split into sections for completion.

If you are experiencing bleeding, red, irritated gums, schedule an examination with Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center in Philadelphia, PA. Call us at (215) 279-1193 or visit our website, www.nicholascosmeticdentalcenter.com

Dental Crowns at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center

When a tooth becomes weakened, it becomes irritating and can be while chewing. Here at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center in Philadelphia, PA, we try everything we can to save a tooth from extraction. This is why we choose to implement dental crowns for our patients who need extra strength and protection for a tooth.

Dental crowns are like a cap that goes on a tooth that has been weakened. In cases where the root of the tooth is still intact, a crown may be placed on the tooth to repair its strength and extend its life. A crown can be constructed of gold, porcelain, or porcelain covered metal. The options including porcelain blend right in with the rest of your teeth, so you cannot even tell there is a crown.

The crown is custom-created by a dental laboratory. We send them impressions of your tooth after reshaping the enamel for the crown. When the permanent crown is ready, we cement it into place. With a regular oral hygiene routine and regular visits to your dentist, a dental crown may last up to fifteen years.

A dental crown restores your tooth, you smile, and your normal oral function. Dental Veneers for the Perfect Smile

A nice smile can turn anyone’s day around. A beautiful, bright smile is an attainable goal here at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center in Philadelphia, PA with dental veneers. We provide veneers to those who want great looking teeth without a major procedure.

Dental veneers provide straight, white, bright teeth without having to work on your actual teeth. Veneers are a ceramic shell that fits right over your existing teeth. They can instantly fix the look of misaligned, misshapen, or discolored teeth, among other tissues. Dental implants are long-lasting and are custom created in a dental laboratory to fit your teeth perfectly. Veneers are also stain resistant, so a white smile is possible for a long time.

To begin the process of attaching veneers, a thin layer of enamel will be taken off the teeth. An impression will then be taken of the teeth to create custom-fitted shells. During the time the veneers are being created, temporary veneers may be worn. When ready, the permanent veneers are attached and fitted for correct bite and use. When taken good care of, veneers can last up to ten years.

If you are looking for an attractive, bold smile without major dental work like surgery or braces, veneers may be the perfect option for you. Treatment for Sleep Apnea in Philadelphia, PA

While sleeping, for some, tissue in the throat can block the air passage and cause sleep apnea. When untreated, sleep apnea can be dangerous and cause harm to many of the body’s systems. The doctors here at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center in Philadelphia, PA provide several surgical procedures to improve breathing throughout the night and control sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea can cause a person to stop breathing from a range of a few times per night to hundreds of times per night. This causes loud snoring and disrupted sleep. Due to the lack of oxygen and sleep, sleep apnea can result in higher risks of heart failure, heart disease, stroke, and liver problems.

Here at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center, we can help solve sleep apnea and introduce a safe, restful night of sleep for our patients suffering from the complications. There are three surgical procedures we perform. The first is an uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, a procedure that removes excess tissue from the upper throat and mouth. The second procedure, called maxillomandibular advancement, moves the jaw forward, creating more room behind the soft palate. When these treatments do not work to solve sleep apnea, a tracheostomy may be performed. A tube is inserted through the neck for breathing at night. It can be covered during the day and only used when needed; while sleeping.

If you are suffering with sleep apnea, do not hesitate to schedule a consultation with us here at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center in Philadelphia, PA. Call us at (215) 279-1193 or visit our website, www.nicholascosmeticdentalcenter.com

Botox Cosmetic and Juvederm Filler at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center

Nothing complements a brand-new smile more than smooth, youthful skin. This is why Dr. Shireen Malik of our Philadelphia, PA dental practice, Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center, is offering Botox Cosmetic and Juvederm Filler to her patients desiring a refreshed look.

Botox Cosmetic can reduce the look of crow’s feet and frown lines between the eyes. It is injected around the areas to reduce the amount of muscle activity and reduce the lines it causes. The process takes about ten minutes and the results can be seen within twenty-four to forty-eight hours. The results can last up to four months.

Juvederm filler is an injectable gel made of hyaluronic acid, the same acid in our skin that is lost as we age. This is used for lines and wrinkles that develop around the mouth. The lines that can be reduced include parentheses lines, corner lines, marionette lines, and vertical lip lines. Results are seen almost instantly and can last up to a year.

Young looking, smooth skin goes hand-in-hand with a beautiful, new smile! If you have been curious about reducing the look of lines and wrinkles, Dr. Shireen Malik is trained, certified, and skilled in applying Botox Cosmetic and Juvederm Filler. For a consultation, call our office at (215) 279-1193 or visit our website, www.nicholascosmeticdentalcenter.com

Lumineers at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center

An attractive smile is a key ingredient for confidence. And confidence can go a long way. For instant, beautiful smiles, Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center is offering Lumineers to their patients in the Philadelphia, PA area.

Lumineers are ultra-thin porcelain veneers that are bonded right to the front of your existing teeth. They are durable to last over twenty years, but are completely reversible if desired. They work well to fix the look of stained, discolored teeth, as well as teeth that have gaps, cracks, or are misaligned.

Lumineers are created in a dental laboratory to be completely customized to your smile. They are made to fit your teeth and look natural in your mouth. First, your dentist will take impressions of your upper and lower teeth, along with photos that will help the creation of each shell. When the shells are ready to be placed, your dentist will lightly etch the surface of your tooth for a strong bond, and then place the Lumineers. Your dentist will then check for a good fit and natural bite.

Lumineers are a quick way to improve the aesthetic look of your smile without the major dental work of surgery or braces. They are also stain-resistant, also so having that bright, white smile is possible for a long time!

If you have been longing for an attractive, fresh smile, come see us at our Philadelphia, PA office for a Lumineers consultation. To schedule, call (215) 279-1193 or visit our Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center website, www.nicholascosmeticdentalcenter.com

Traditional Implants and Mini Implants

Replacing teeth is vital for your oral health. Missing teeth can lead to a degenerated jawbone, a change in facial structure, and irritated gums. This is why the dentists here at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center provide dental implants to replace missing teeth. Traditional implants and mini implants are available to allow the best options for our patients.

Traditional implants are full sized tooth replacements. They are better than bridges, because there is no reduction of healthy, adjacent teeth in order to place them. They are also better options than dentures, because there is no taking them out or having them slip around while talking or chewing.

Mini implants are great for tooth replacement in a smaller space. They are also quicker to install, often able to be completed within one day. Another use is a more stable base for dentures. By installing four to six mini implants along the gum line, a full set of dentures can be securely clicked into place.

Both types of implants are completely customized. They are created in a dental lab where they are made to fit perfectly with your nearby teeth and have the look and feel of a normal tooth. With good care, both types can last a lifetime.

If you are looking for permanent tooth replacement, dental implants may be the option for you! To schedule a consultation, call our Philadelphia, PA practice at (215) 279-1193 or visit our website, www.nicholascosmeticdentalcenter.com

Invisalign for Nearly Invisible and Comfortable Teeth Straightening

We want to offer our patients the most comfortable experience for their dental work. For those who are interested in braces, but do not want to go through the process wearing the noticeable and physically irritating metal braces, Invisalign is an option here at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center in Philadelphia, PA.

Invisalign is a teeth straightening system that uses clear, plastic trays to move teeth instead of brackets and wires. They are not nearly as noticeable as the traditional metal braces and also not nearly as irritating to the mouth. The plastic is smooth and shaped to your teeth, so your cheeks and gums are not scratched and calloused.

Your dentist will take an impression of your teeth and then create a step by step process for straightening your teeth. The tray aligners are created and changed out every two weeks. You will go back to see your dentist once every four to five weeks to make sure that the process is going as planned. The trays should be worn as much as possible, about twenty to twenty-two hours per day. You can take them out when you eat and brush your teeth, which is another clear advantage over traditional braces!

If you are looking to straighten your teeth and want to see if Invisalign could be right for you, schedule a consultation with our dentists here at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center located in Philadelphia, PA. To schedule or for more information, call (215) 279-1193 or visit our website, www.nicholascosmeticdentalcenter.com

Inlays and Onlays

At Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center, Dr. Shireen Malik and Dr. James Cavalancia want to provide their patients with options when it comes to repairing damaged teeth. Since each patient’s dental needs are different, the best treatment for one patient may not be the best treatment for another.  That’s why we provide options for replacing teeth damaged by decay or injury.

Traditional fillings, also called direct fillings, are a good choice for patients who need to repair damaged teeth. However, when restorative needs are more than a filling can provide, inlays and onlays are the ideal dental option. Inlays/onlays are used to repair a tooth that has been damaged due to cavity or injury. These molded dental prosthetics are applied to the damaged tooth, preserving its structure and the health of your smile.

Some advantages of an inlay/onlay are it often covers less area of a tooth than a traditional filling. This means more of the natural tooth is preserved. In addition, inlays/onlays fit precisely, which reduces the amount of bacteria that can get between gaps or spaces. Inlays/onlays are also stronger than traditional fillings and tend to last longer.

Dr. Shireen Malik and Dr. James Cavalancia will be happy to discuss inlays/onlays with you and help you decide what works best for you. To schedule an appointment at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center, call (215) 279-1193 or visit www.nicholascosmeticdentalcenter.com for more information.

Dental Bonding

Of all the cosmetic and restorative procedures, dental bonding is one of the easiest and most affordable. Called bonding because tooth-colored resin is bonded to your teeth, the procedure is used to repair teeth that are discolored, unevenly shaped or chipped. At our Philadelphia, PA office, Dr. Shireen Malik and Dr. James Cavalancia use bonding as an alternative to amalgam fillings in cases when only a small filling is required.

Bonding is achieved by applying incredibly strong resin to the tooth in need of restoration. The procedure can usually be accomplished in one visit and allows you to keep most of your tooth’s original enamel, which makes bonding preferable to veneers or crowns in many cases. Once the right color resin has been chosen for your smile, Dr. Shireen Malik and Dr. James Cavalancia will slightly abrade your teeth to roughen the surface. Then a conditioning liquid is applied to help the resin adhere. The putty-like resin is then applied to your tooth and molded and smoothed until it is in the proper shape. It is hardened with an ultraviolet light or laser. After the bonding material has hardened, your dentist will trim and shape it even more and then polish it until it shines like a tooth. Altogether, the procedure usually takes between 30 minutes to an hour for one tooth.

If you’re unhappy with your teeth but unwilling to go as far as veneers, bonding can be used to improve your smile quickly and effectively.

Importance of Regular Cleanings

Although you may not think about going to the dentist until you have a problem, such as a toothache or loose filling, routine checkups are very important! Coming in for a checkup and regular cleanings plays a vital role in maintaining good oral health and preventing dental problems.

At Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center, we offer a variety of dental services including regular cleanings and oral hygiene upkeep. Regular dental cleanings involve removing plaque and tartar from the teeth and gum line. Even if you brush your teeth and floss regularly, you still need a dental cleaning.

A professional cleaning involves the use of special tools, which helps remove tartar that brushing can’t. In addition, the hygienist and dentist can detect signs of gum disease early and recommended treatment. Regular cleanings also give your doctor at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center the opportunity to follow your dental health and compare your current condition with previous visits. This helps determine if gum disease is progressing.

Current research indicates gum disease may increase your chances of developing health problems, such as heart disease. Maintaining good oral health is not only about having a nice smile and white teeth. Preventing gum disease and keeping your mouth healthy can have an impact on your overall health. Schedule an appointment at our Philadelphia, PA practice with Dr. Shireen Malik or Dr. James Cavalancia by calling (215) 279-1193.

Night Guards

Night guards provided here at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center help our patients get relief from their jaw pain and headaches, and protect their teeth. Some patients find themselves clenching and grinding their teeth either during the day or, more often, at night while sleeping.  Most patients are not even aware that they even have this problem that is slowly damaging their teeth.  It is more problematic at night because it can happen for hours at a time while sleeping. Teeth clenching and grinding stresses and wears down tooth enamel.  These problems can also cause irritation to the gums. Not only do our patients complain of headaches, and jaw pain, but can also have ear pain frequently because of excessive teeth clenching and grinding.

Dr. Shireen Malik and Dr. James Cavalancia offer a solution from our Philadelphia, PA dental clinic in the form of night guards. Night guards are custom made mouthguards for the patient, based on impressions taken of their teeth. Every night, the patient is instructed to wear the night guard which protects their teeth if they start clenching or grinding them. It acts as a barrier between the top and bottom teeth, so they can’t grind anymore and their teeth are protected.

Professionally created night guards tend to be of a higher quality and superior fit because they are made in a special laboratory from an impression of your mouth. The main function of your night guard is to prevent the surfaces of your teeth from grinding together. These devices are comfortable and will not disrupt your sleep patterns.

Root Canals

If you have an infected nerve in your tooth, a root canal procedure is necessary for saving your tooth and alleviating your pain. Once a nerve becomes infected, it is incredibly important to have this procedure performed or the infection could become an abscess, which can lead to the infection spreading into your jawbone. When the infection reaches this point, it could result in a loss of bone mass in your jaw. If you are experiencing extreme pain in one of your teeth, you may have an infected tooth in need of a root canal Drs. Shireen Malik and James Cavalancia of Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center in Philadelphia, PA have the skills and experience to help you.

During a root canal procedure, a local anesthetic is used to numb the area around the infected tooth. Your doctor then drills into the tooth to access the canal and remove the infected tissue. Then the canal is cleaned before being filled with a sealant. A crown is used to cap the tooth, which improves the strength and appearance of the remaining tooth structure. It will also help protect the tooth from further infection.

If this process sounds scary, you should know that advances in modern dental technology have made root canals a much easier process with many more benefits than disadvantages. There is little pain in root canal procedures thank sot local anesthetics and pain medications, and any resultant soreness is well below the pain of infection.

If you are feeling pain and sensitivity to heat, cold and pressure in one of your teeth, you may need a root canal procedure. For relief from you pain, schedule an appointment with at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center  in Philadelphia, PA by calling (215) 279-1193. Tooth Extractions

If decay has reached too deeply into a patient’s tooth or if an infection has damaged too much of the supporting bone or tissue, that patient will need a tooth extraction, and at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center in Philadelphia, PA, Dr. Shireen Malik and Dr. James Cavalancia perform extractions to ensure that their patient’s oral health is restored.

Before the procedure is performed, a local anesthetic will be used to numb the area around the extraction site. If it is a simple extraction, the tooth will be loosened with an elevator and then extracted with forceps. Your dentist at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center may also choose to smooth and contour the underlying bone after the tooth is removed. Once finished, your dentist will suture the gums.

After the extraction, it is critical for patients to keep the area clean to prevent infection. A dry, sterile gauze will be placed over the gums to limit bleeding. Patients must make sure to keep it in place for 30 to 45 minutes while the blood clots. During the 24 hours after the procedure, patients should not smoke, rinse their mouth vigorously or clean the teeth immediately adjacent to the extraction site. Strenuous activity, hot liquids and straw drinking should also be avoided. A certain amount of pain and discomfort accompanies an extraction, so a painkiller may be prescribed.

Patients suffering pain from decay, infection or impaction can turn to Dr. Shireen Malik or Dr. James Cavalancia to determine if a tooth extraction is required to save their smile.  Schedule an appointment in Philadelphia, PA by calling (215) 279-1193. Dentures

If you’re looking to restore your smile after losing multiple teeth, dentures offer a great solution for patients in Philadelphia, PA. Drs. Shireen Malik and James Cavalancia of Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center offer three different types of dentures: partial dentures, conventional full dentures and immediate full dentures, and they can help determine which choice is best for you.

Conventional full dentures are one type of dentures that are used once all of a patient’s teeth have been removed. However, they are not placed until after the patient’s gum tissue has healed from the teeth extraction, which usually takes a few months. During that healing time, the patient would not have any teeth at all. If the idea of living for a few months without teeth doesn’t appeal to you, you can receive immediate full dentures instead. For this type, you would have your mouth measured prior to tooth extraction. Then after your teeth are removed at the next appointment, the dentures could be placed immediately. This method, however, requires a follow-up visit for refitting and tightening your dentures because your jaw will naturally change shape as it heals with no teeth.

When a patient does not need all their teeth removed but still have a significant portion removed, partial dentures are a common solution. They are similar to bridges except bridges are permanent while partial dentures are removable. Whichever type of dentures you get, they do take time getting used to since the flesh-colored base is placed over your gums, which can feel bulky or make your mouth feel crowded. However, as you train yourself, eating and talking will begin to feel more natural.

Whether you’ve already lost a significant amount of teeth or are in need of extractions, dentures are a popular option, and Drs. Shireen Malik and James Cavalancia can help their patients find which choice is best for them in Philadelphia, PA. To schedule an appointment at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center, call (215) 279-1193. Take Home Tray Whitening

White teeth are an important part of a beautiful smile and can help you feel more confident about your appearance. However, even with diligent brushing and flossing, your teeth can become dull and darker due to constant exposure to the acid present in food and drinks. Teeth whitening procedures can help to restore the color and gleam to your teeth, which is why Dr. Shireen Malik and Dr. James Cavalancia provide take-home whitening trays to help you achieve a smile you will love to show off in Philadelphia, PA.

Teeth whitening services are becoming more and more popular, and as the demand for whiter teeth increases, patients are realizing that over-the-counter techniques just aren’t as effective as options offered by their dentist. The team here at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center offers take-home trays to help patients achieve exceptional smiles in only a few sessions.

The tray system can be completed in two steps. First, your dentist will take an impression of your teeth to craft custom whitening trays that you can use over and over. Second, you will apply the gentle, whitening gel to the trays and wear the trays for a short period of time. With this method, patients can whiten their smile four to eight shades in only a few days! For best results, use the whitening system after your regular dental cleaning.

Whitening your teeth is an easy and dramatic way to improve the look of your smile. If you are looking to make your pearly whites white again, schedule an appointment with Dr. Shireen Malik or Dr. James Cavalancia for teeth whitening services in Philadelphia, PA by calling (215) 279-1193. Pediatric Sealants

Although brushing and flossing is effective at removing food particles and plaque from the smooth surfaces of our teeth, sometimes these methods are ineffective at thoroughly cleaning the nooks and crannies in our premolars and molars. Because molars are the hardest to clean and the teeth most used in the chewing process, they are the most susceptible to cavities and decay, which is why Dr. Shireen Malik and Dr. James Cavalancia recommend sealants soon after molars emerge when children are between the ages of 6 and 14. At our practice, Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center in Philadelphia, PA we treat patients of all ages!

Dental sealants are a thin, plastic coating applied to the chewing surfaces of the molars to prevent cavities and tooth decay. The sealant is applied by the doctor, who first roughens the surface of the molar with acid and then paints on the sealant. The sealant bonds into the depressions and grooves of the teeth, hardening and forming a shield over the enamel to protect it for approximately 10 years.

Sealants are normally applied to children’s molars because their teeth are especially susceptible to cavities. However, sometimes they are applied on adult molars if they have hard-to-clean grooves that are causing cavities.

To schedule an appointment, call our office in Philadelphia, PA at (215) 279-1193. For more information, visit www.nicholascosmeticdentalcenter.com.

Dental Bridges

If you have had a tooth extracted due to damage, decay or disease, it is important to have the resulting gap filled or your remaining teeth can shift out of position. When this happens, your teeth become more susceptible to disease and decay. Our team here at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center can help you keep your smile beautiful and functional with dental bridges.

This oral appliance is called a bridge because it literally creates a bridge to cross the area where your tooth is missing. This prosthetic tooth replacement is usually made from gold, metal, alloys or porcelain to ensure a strong and durable smile that can last more than a decade if properly cared for.

The process of creating a bridge takes two visits to our office. In the first, we will create abutments out of the existing teeth on both sides of your missing tooth. This is where the bridge will be attached. After the abutments are prepared, a mold is made of your mouth for creating the bridge, which will fit and feel as close to your natural teeth as possible. The bridge will consist of two crowns, which will be fixed to the abutments, and a pontic, which is the prosthetic that will replace your missing tooth. We provide you with a temporary bridge while your permanent one is crafted in the lab. On the second visit, the permanent bridge will be fixed to the abutments with an adhesive.

To schedule an appointment with either Dr. Shireen Malik or Dr. James Cavalancia call (215) 279-1193. For more information about their Philadelphia, PA practice, visit www.nicholascosmeticdentalcenter.com

Bad Breath

If you are experiencing bad breath, it is likely due to bacteria in your oral cavity. Many of our patients visit our practice complaining of bad breath, and we have found a variety of things to cause it. It may be lack of proper dental hygiene, the food or drinks they are consuming, smoking cigarettes, or having an infection or deep decay of the teeth. We diagnose the problem then provide an effective solution for reducing bad breath.

When a patient experiences bad breath, it can be damaging to their self-esteem. They feel afraid to confront others and don’t feel confident being in relationships. These struggles don’t need to continue if a patient visits us to get a dental screening and deep cleaning. This deep cleaning removes all of the bacteria built-up and decay from their teeth, and gives them a fresh mouth. We also urge our patients to stop habits like smoking, which can further cause bad breath.

Aside from providing a good cleaning, we also perform a check-up and x-rays to see if other dental issues are causing the bad breath. If you have bad breath, visit our team here at Nicholas Cosmetic Dental Center in Philadelphia, PA to discuss your options.

Patient Rewards Program

PATIENT REWARDS PROGRAM www.PatientRewardsProgram.com
Patient Rewards Program is a patient management and sales tool that can be used by healthcare practices such as Dental, Orthodontics, Dermatologist, Cosmetic, Chiropractic etc. to

·         Motivate your employee to work better by rewarding them with incentives

THE PATIENT REWARDS PROGRAM SOLUTION
Here I have tried to describe some common problems that a healthcare office faces and the Patient Rewards Program solution to these problems

PROBLEM/SOLUTION 1
Current Problems: Currently healthcare offices do not offer any benefits, rewards or incentives to their patients. Most of the offices just treat patients for their issues and take money from them either through their insurance or self-pay. They do not give them any incentive to come back to their office. This creates a void in the market. There is no incentive for a patient to choose between two equally good healthcare offices to go to. The patients are not tied to one specific office. Therefore healthcare offices are losing clients
Patient rewards Program Solution: PRP Program allows the healthcare offices to retain their existing Clients/Patients by locking them in. It allows them to give attractive incentives to their patients thereby generating interest in sticking to one healthcare office and makes it easy for the patient to choose which office he would prefer to go to. If my dermatologist is giving me a $25 cash back coupon for a service that I got done, I will obviously want to redeem it and also try to earn more incentives for future treatments

PROBLEM/SOLUTION 2
Current problem: A lot of healthcare offices have home grown products that they sell to their patients. This currently makes up to 30% of the office collections. Employees are trained to sell, sell and sell. However offices are limited to selling to only the clients that show up to the office. At any given time an office could have more than 1000 patients but it is selling to only maximum 8-15 patients that show up on a given day. This is a slow process and has limited returns
Patient Rewards Program Solution: PRP program allows you to interact with all your patients at the same time. It gives you a market place to sell your products and services online exclusively to all your patients. Every time your office adds a new service offering or product in the catalog, an email alert is sent to the all the patients announcing it, therefore increasing the chances of the product being sold by many times over

PROBLEM/SOLUTION 3
Current Problem: Healthcare offices really value a client referral. However they solely rely on a good word spread by their patient verbally. At any given time a healthcare office will receive an average of 4-5 referrals in a month. This is again a very slow process of growing your patient base. Especially if you are a new practice you want to ramp up on the patient base as soon as possible
Patient Rewards Program Solution: www.PatientRewardsProgram.com is fully integrated with a whole variety of social media sites (Twitter, Google+, Facebook, LinkedIn etc.). When a healthcare office is enrolled in the program all their patients interact using the PRP tool that allows them to announce any great thing they notice about the healthcare office on social media, giving the office immense visibility and potentially a lot more clients. Patients have the capability to announce their gift cards, redeemed items, freebies on social media instantly. If I as a patient just redeemed a $25 gift card I would want to tell everyone on facebook what a great deal I got through my office. PRP allows you to do just that. This gives immense amount of visibility to the healthcare office thereby generating more clients

PROBLEM/SOLUTION 4
Current Problem: Any healthcare office has at least 15 – 30% dead clients. Patients who were once a client but never came back. Usually they hire sales people or front desk receptionists to make cold calls all day long to re-book the dead clients. This is a slow cumbersome process and a failed attempt to revive old patients

Patient Rewards Program Solution: PRP allows you to entice old patients by putting out incentives for them. If my old dentist told me that I would get a free Sonicare toothbrush if I came back for a cleaning, I would want to go back to him. Patient Rewards Program is a great way to add these incentives and deals exclusively for all your patients and motivate them to come back to your office.
